To give you a taster from his chapter, below is one of his answers…

What do you believe makes an entrepreneur successful?

Just like leaders, entrepreneurs can build personal relationships through fostering cooperation and teamwork. The majority of entrepreneurs are very good communicators, at least with the group of people that form their management team. They encourage social interaction and often create personal relationships with key people in their businesses. By engaging people at all levels, and encouraging a positive approach to work and problem solving, they can develop quality front-line staff and customers. They generate amazing levels of loyalty from the people who work in their businesses.

Entrepreneurs are driven by the thrill of the chase and are always looking for the next opportunity or business deal. The thing they fear most is failure. This provides them with the motivation to succeed. Wilson Harrell called this, ‘Dealing with entrepreneurial terror, the fear at the beginning of a business’s life that it may not work’.

This story lacks integrity…
September 2nd, 2008

Today my grandfather sent me the story below via email. It certainly lacks integrity, however that aside, it is a good example of “Thinking Outside The Box”. Plus hopefully it will make you laugh or at least put a smile on your face. Enjoy!

__________________________________________

Young Johnny moved to Albury and bought a horse from a farmer for $100.00.

The farmer agreed to deliver the horse the next day.

The next day he drove up and said, ‘Sorry son, but I have some bad news, the horse died.’

Johnny replied, ‘Well, then just give me my money back.’

The farmer said, ‘Can’t do that. I went and spent it already.’

‘Ok, then, just bring me the dead horse.’

The farmer asked, ‘What ya gonna do with him?

Johnny said, ‘I’m going to raffle him off.’

The farmer said, ‘You can’t raffle off a dead horse!’

Johnny said, ‘Sure I can. Watch me. I just won’t tell anybody he’s dead.’

A month later, the farmer met up with Johnny and asked, ‘What happened with that dead horse?’

Johnny said, ‘I raffled him off. I sold 500 tickets at two dollars a piece and made a net profit of $898.00.’

The farmer said, ‘Didn’t anyone complain?’

Johnny said, ‘Just the guy who won. So I gave him his two dollars back.’

Johnny grew up and now works for the government in the tax department…..

Become a More Successful Leader

Until next time, this is Dale Beaumont from the Secrets Exposed Club.

Today I am pleased to introduce you to David Cunningham, who is featured in our book ‘Secrets of Top Sales Professionals Exposed!’

Irish-born, David, established a career in the intense world of investment banking, before co-founding Shanghai Vision Ltd. His company sells residential real estate investments in Shanghai to non-Chinese overseas investors. Faced with having to sell something that customers could not see first is testimony to David’s ability as a salesperson.

It also serves as proof of his high energy-approach to building trust and rapport with overseas customers, hiring and motivating the right salespeople, focusing on goals and management. Find out more about David’s sales journey!

This photo is of me and David at our contributor event:

To learn more about David, you can download his chapter directly from the Secrets Exposed Club! In his chapter you will:

* Find out how to establish a business overseas and build trust and rapport with customers.

* Learn a sales process that is direct but extremely personal (and identifies the customers’ needs more specifically).

* Know what to look for when hiring salespeople (especially when high-energy people not fazed by rejections are rare!).

* Understand that you must maintain focus on your goals to succeed in a world that now has numerous distractions, like the internet.

* Benefit from this advice about selling in Asia.

To give you a little taster, here is one of the questions and answers from David’s chapter, relating to staff turnover:

From your experience, how can one reduce staff turnover? Did you ever get it wrong?

I have found that staff retention all starts with hiring correctly – prevention is better than cure. Here are the steps I use:

1. Invest the time to write a detailed and well thought-out job description.

2. Learn interviewing skills and undertake two separate interviews when looking at an applicant.

3. Ensure that the candidate reads the company business plan and meets local staff members before they start.

4. Execute ongoing quarterly appraisals with mutually agreed goals.

In the early days when I had direct management over my sales team, I had zero staff turnover. As the company grew to three sales offices globally, it became more challenging to manage the recruiting and retention of sales staff in the offices I was not present in.

I had to delegate this responsibility to other managers. I recall having one particular manager who, unfortunately, simply did not live up to the values of Shanghai Vision. He was not meeting appraisal targets and was making excuses for his poor performance. I should have had more candid appraisals with this person earlier on but I was procrastinating.

What I had was a great operations manager trying to lead a sales team and the skills mismatch was apparent. We parted ways and the person tried to sue the company for unfair dismissal.

Sales managers need excellent sales experience and a track record so they can lead by example and earn the respect of their sales team. This manager had a 100 per cent staff turnover while he was recruiting sales staff, and none of them could hit their sales target.

Lesson learnt: a different skill set is required when managing a sales team.
